Picnic Recipes

Picnics mean fun, casual dining outdoors in a beautiful setting, enjoying the sunshine, and taking part in the activities of spring, summer and fall. Picnic food is simple, delicious fare made from classic recipes with fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients. With some planning, careful menu selection, and time-tested recipes, you can put together a wonderful outdoor meal, that is easy to pack and transport to your favorite picnic spot.

Whether fully or partially prepared at home, or prepared on location, plan your menu ahead of time with a careful eye towards packing and keeping cold foods cold, and hot foods hot. The more preparation and cooking done at home means the more enjoyment you and your diners will have, and the more attention you can pay to small details as your picnic unfolds.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, and baked beans are obvious choices, especially for children, but there is no reason you can't enjoy gourmet style picnic fare using great ingredients with simple preparation. Nothing starts a picnic off better than some easy appetizers to whet appetites. This gives you plenty of time to get grills heated, outdoor activities started and any last minute picnic set-up or cooking preparation completed.

Everyone loves grilled food, so consider using publicly supplied grilling equipment or packing a small grill for use. Think safety first and always pack enough more than enough fuel to get the job done. Use your crockpot the night before to steam ribs, and slow cook meats for finishing on the grill.
